A Revelation! And A Mini-Tutorial!

Recently, I attended a bead show here in Monroeville, PA! I found these really great flowery spacer beads and had to have them!  They are pewter so they were very reasonably priced!

I really like them a lot, but wanted to use them when making earrings, too.

I really liked them, but wanted to use them when making earrings or dangles.  But being flat spacers, they just don't look right.

That's when I had my little revelation!  I'll try and dome them!  If I try one and it breaks, no biggie!  But if they do work, YAY, bead caps!

So I got my block out,

Inserted the spacer in one of the domed crevices that pretty well matched the size of the spacer,

And proceeded to use my rawhide mallet to beat the little things into submission!

Voila!  A beautiful little bead cap made from some funky spacers that I love!  AND, the bonus is that they can fit a variety of bead sizes!  The pink quartz is a 10mm bead, while ...
the lampwork bead I made is 16mm!  One thing to keep in mind.  If you beat the little spacers too much, you may break them.

But breaking one was worth the experiment.  Maybe you're reading this and saying, Well, duh Sue!  Of course you can do this with flat spacers!  But maybe I sparked an idea in your head to work with another type of flat bead (filigree, perhaps) and you may experiment with doming!  I know I will be doming some more flat things soon!

That is such a great idea! I love those little spacers and think they would make great dangles all clustered on a chain. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the day. Erin

Must be nice to be able to afford the dapping stuff. That's far out of my price range, I imagine. I'd love to hear I'm wrong and be pointed to something affordable.

Thanks,
Lynn

What a great idea, Sue! The spacers are the perfect bead caps for your beautiful beads!

Hi Sue,
Try heating the spacers with a heatgun before trying to dome them. Use a dome space larger than spacer on the first try, then move down a size. Less stress on the spacer.

Bead Soup Blog Party!

Welcome to the 3rd Bead Soup Blog Party! What is a Bead Soup Blog Party? Each beader was paired up with another jewelry designer and tasked with sending the following: ~ A focal ~ A special clasp (not just a lobster claw) ~ Some coordinating spacers or beads Using the focal and the clasp was mandatory, but we could use anything from our own stash to round out the rest, and choose to use the coordinating beads or not. You may recall my partner was Margot Potter ; click this link to see the blog post I wrote of what she sent me! Here's what I made! Dangly earrings! Come see what the rest of us made! 1. AE Component of the Month - July - Scarabs by Me!

I provided the scarab beads for the Component of the Month Challenge over at Art Elements for July! And as usual, didn't take a photo of my own bead before I started working with it.  But here is the one I used - unfortunately, you can't see the lustrous oil slick colors of this black metallic glass because once again we have cloudy days here in Pittsburgh. I made a choker length necklace using spiral stitch and these awesome seed beads that go so well with this black metallic glass! I used hematite swarovski crystals to divide the bead stitching and the scarab focal bead; I actually ordered a pile of pairs of various black swarovski colors and decided that these match the best! I finished off the necklace with the ball socket clasp - it's a nice way to finish a spiral stitch - the size is just right and it's fairly easy to sew into the design. Please check out what our guests and team members made with their scarabs! And thanks to everyone who took par...

Art Elements April Theme Challenge - Repurpose

The AE Theme Challenge this month is Repurpose chosen by Lesley. Great subject, and I wish I had more time to work on it. The day job kind of takes away my creative energy at times, and this month is no exception! However I did manage to do a few things! The first thing I thought of for the theme was something I had been thinking about for a long time. I remembered I had this magazine that repurposed those desiccant containers you get in pill bottles into beaded beads. I set out to find that magazine in my stash. I'm glad I found it, because it was actually driving me nuts as to where it was. Here are some photos of me in the process of making some of these beads. So the first one I made, I liked ok. But noticed on the end that you could see the white container through the ends. So I got a sharpie out for the next one, and colored the ends so they didn't look so white. Then I made a few more of these beads, and quite honestly, I was done with...
